What FTP security options do I have with a dedicated server?

Your dedicated server includes Microsoft’s IIS FTP server.  IIS FTP has two types of authentication methods, standard FTP and isolated FTP.
1. Standard FTP
• This is the FTP option which is enabled for you by default.
• It allows all users with a valid NT account to log into the FTP site.
• Once the user is logged in, they are granted access to the home directory folder depending on what permissions their user account has on the folder.
• If the user account is not listed in the security permissions for the folder, the user then has the same permissions as the IUSR account.
• The downfall to the standard FTP method is you can not restrict one user from accessing a different FTP site.  If the user has a valid NT account, they will be able to log into the FTP site.  They will inherit the permissions you have given to the IUSR account, which is usually at least read permissions.
2. Isolated FTP
• To use isolated FTP, create the FTP site as usual.  However, on the 3rd screen of the FTP site wizard, select “Isolate users”
• Select the FTP home directory
• In Windows Explorer, create a folder called localhost under the FTP home directory which you selected.
• Inside the localhost folder, you will need to create a folder for each username you want to have access to the FTP site
• Users must still have a NT account on the server in order to login.  However, they will only be able to access their corresponding folder name to upload and download files.
o For example: let’s say you have an FTP site which points to the d:\shared folder and a user called testuser.  When testuser logs in, the user will only have access to the d:\shared\localhost\testuser folder which you will have already created.
• The downfall to isolated FTP is you can not modify the directory structure, it MUST follow the format: FTP_root_folder\localhost\user_account.  If you have an existing web site which has a set directory structure, and you want to grant a user access to a specific folder, you must copy that folder’s contents into the folder for the user account or use the standard FTP method.

There are other FTP programs, like FTP ServU which offer more in depth authentication and manipulation.  However, those programs are not included with the standard hosting package.  You will need to review each program individually, and have the program review by our support staff for approval.  Once approved, you will need to purchase a license and install the software on your server.
